What is "theriogenology"?

Many clients ask us what the term "theriogenology" means. In short, a theriogenologist is a veterinarian who specializes in animal reproductive medicine. The termed was coined by a group of veterinarians who felt that the human medical titles of "obstetrician/gynecologist" or "andrologist" didn't adequately define the role played by veterinarians. Veterinarians typically work with both the male and female animal so calling ourselves "OB/Gyns" left out a large portion of our patients!

Theriogenology is derived from the Greek root therio-, meaning animal or beast, and gen-, meaning coming into being.
